Lino Tagliapietra is one of the most influential and creative forces in contemporary glass. His career, which spans more than 60 years, has taken him from an apprenticeship in a Venetian glass factory to the forefront of the field. Dinosaur comes from a recent series, in which Tagliapietra pays homage to the graceful, long-necked prehistoric creatures, similar to those on view in Carnegie Museum of Natural History. Tagliapietra’s native Murano and its glassmaking traditions are constant sources of inspiration. In the artist’s words, this work integrates “the strength of the dinosaur with the fluidity of the fishes that inhabit the waters of Venice.”
